Despite his religious upbringing, Bob Dylan is the latest artist planning to craft a Christmas-themed album. Dylan actually isn't the first Jewish artist to do so, as Jewish artists like Neil Diamond and Irving Berlin - who penned the Christmas classic "White Christmas" - started the unorthodox tradition of dipping into another holiday before Dylan.
BullyPulpit first revealed that Dylan recorded songs for the upcoming album, reporting that the living legend recorded Christmas staples like "Must Be Santa," "Here Comes Santa Claus," "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "O Little Town of Bethlehem."
Dylan, whose most recent album, Together Through Life, debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart upon its April release and has since sold over 300,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan, is reportedly recording the album at Jackson Browne's recording studio in Santa Monica, California. Other rumored Bob Dylan projects looming on the horizon are a collaboration with former Beatle Paul McCartney and an appearance on the Beastie Boys' forthcoming album, Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2.
McCartney and Dylan first met when the Fab Four were in New York in 1964, and it was Bob Dylan, according to music lore, who first introduced the Beatles to marijuana. Illegal substances aside, both Dylan and the Beatles were icons of the 1960s and 1970s, and music fans would love to see a collaboration between McCartney and Dylan.
Dylan formerly wrote "I'd Have You Anytime" with another Beatle, George Harrison; the pair also played the Concert for Bangladesh together and were both part of The Travelling Willburys supergroup as well. Sir Paul has expressed his desire to work with Dylan, and the folk legend has spoken well of McCartney in the press, although no real plans to collaborate have been revealed as of yet.
Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 is the follow-up to Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 1, which was set to arrive September 15 but has since been pushed back. On July 20, Beastie Boy Adam "MCA" Yauch announced that doctors found a cancerous tumor in his left salivary gland and that as a result the group was going to postpone the release of Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 1. The Beastie Boys cancelled scheduled performances slated for the rest of the summer, including festival gigs at All Points West, Lollapalooza, Outside lands, Osheaga and Austin City Limits, so Yauch could undergo surgery.
Yauch penned an email to fans on August 5, following his surgery, saying that he is "rapidly recovering" and is prepping for "the next line of treatment." The Beastie Boys-Bob Dylan collaboration came about after Dylan praised the group on his radio show.
The Brooklyn rap trio sampled him on their upcoming album, and it isn't the first time, as they previously used art of Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" for "Finger Lickin' Good" off Crack Your Head. This time, however, Dylan's contribution will be a spoken word piece as opposed to music. Dylan's praise of Mike D, MCA and Ad-Rock on an episode of his Theme Time Radio Hour show will appear in some capacity on the not-yet-finished record.
